The Jews said to Umar, "You recite a verse which, had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day as a festival."Umar replied, "I know exactly where it was revealed, on which day it was revealed, and where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was when it was revealed. It was revealed on the day of Arafah, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing at Arafah."Sufyan said, "I am not certain whether it was a Friday or not."The verse referred to is "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion" [Maidah 5:3].
حدثنا عبد الرحمن حدثنا سفيان عن قيس بن مسلم
أن اليهود قالوا لعمر إنكم تقرءون آية لو أنزلت فينا لاتخذنا ذلك اليوم عيدا فقال إني لأعلم حيث أنزلت وأي يوم أنزلت وأين رسول الله ﷺ حين أنزلت أنزلت يوم عرفة ورسول الله ﷺ واقف بعرفة قال سفيان وأشك يوم جمعة أو لا يعني {اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم وأتممت عليكم نعمتي ورضيت لكم الإسلام دينا}
