My husband went out in search of some slaves of his who had run off. He caught up with them at the edge of Qadum, and they killed him. Word of his death reached me while I was staying in a house far from the houses of my family. So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about it.I said, "Word of my husband's death reached me while I was in a house far from the houses of my family. He left me no maintenance and no wealth for his heirs, and the dwelling is not his. If I could move to my family and my maternal relatives, it would be easier for me in some of my affairs."He said, "Then move."But when I had gone out to the masjid, or to the courtyard, he called me back, or gave an order concerning me so that I was called back, and he said, "Stay in the house where word of your husband's death reached you until the prescribed term is complete."She said, "So I observed my waiting period there, four months and ten days."She added, "Later Uthman sent for me, and I informed him of this, and he adopted it as his ruling."
