The Muslims were people of modest means and used to wrap themselves in striped cloaks that reached only to the middle of their shins or thereabouts. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, referring to the women, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not raise her head until we raise our heads," out of concern that she might glimpse the men's private areas due to the shortness of their lower garments.

كان المسلمون ذوي حاجة يأتزرون بهذه النمرة فكانت إنما تبلغ أنصاف سوقهم أو نحو ذلك فسمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر يعني النساء فلا ترفع رأسها حتى نرفع رءوسنا كراهية أن تنظر إلى عورات الرجال من صغر أزرهم
