Abu Bakr set out as a trader bound for Busra, accompanied by Naeem and Suwaybit bin Harmala, both of whom were veterans of Badr. Suwaybit was in charge of the provisions.Naeem came to him and said, "Give me something to eat."Suwaybit replied, "Not until Abu Bakr arrives."Naeem was a jovial man, fond of joking, so he said, "I will surely vex you."He went off to some people who had brought riding beasts and said to them, "Buy from me a sturdy Arab slave. He has a sharp tongue and may well say, 'I am a free man.' If you would let him go on that account, leave me be and do not ruin my sale of my slave to me."They said, "Rather, we will buy him from you for ten young she-camels."He came back driving the camels and brought the people along. He hobbled the camels, then said to the people, "Here he is, take him."The people came and said to Suwaybit, "We have bought you."Suwaybit said, "He is a liar. I am a free man."They said, "He has already told us your story." They threw a rope around his neck and took him away. When Abu Bakr arrived and was told what had happened, he went with some companions, returned the camels, and took Suwaybit back. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions laughed about this for a year.
