Ayesha reported,

The Prophet ﷺ used to pray these two units of prayer. Muawiya sent a delegation to Ayesha, and I was among them. We asked her about this, and she replied, "I did not hear it from the Prophet ﷺ myself, but Umm Salama told me about it."So we went to Umm Salama and asked her. Umm Salama related that the Prophet ﷺ prayed Zuhr, then something was brought to him which he began distributing, until the time for Asr came. He stood and prayed Asr, then prayed two units after it. When he had finished, he said, "These are two units I used to pray after Zuhr."Umm Salama said, "I told her that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had forbidden these two units."The narrator said, I went to Muawiya and informed him of this. Ibn Zubayr said, "Did he not pray them himself? I will continue to pray them."Muawiya said to him, "You are contrary indeed. You will go on loving opposition for as long as you live."

حدثنا محمد بن جعفر قال حدثنا شعبة عن يزيد بن أبي زياد قال سألت عبد الله بن الحارث عن الركعتين بعد العصر فقال كنا عند معاوية فحدث عن ابن الزبير

عن عائشة

أن النبي ﷺ كان يصليهما فأرسل معاوية إلى عائشة وأنا فيهم فسألناها فقالت لم أسمعه من النبي ﷺ ولكن حدثتني أم سلمة فسألتها فحدثت أم سلمة أن النبي ﷺ صلى الظهر ثم أتي بشيء فجعل يقسمه حتى حضرت صلاة العصر فقام فصلى العصر ثم صلى بعدها ركعتين فلما صلاها قال هاتان الركعتان كنت أصليهما بعد الظهر فقالت أم سلمة ولقد حدثتها أن رسول الله ﷺ نهى عنهما قال فأتيت معاوية فأخبرته بذلك فقال ابن الزبير أليس قد صلاهما لا أزال أصليهما فقال له معاوية إنك لمخالف لا تزال تحب الخلاف ما بقيت
