The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to see me one day and placed his garment between his thighs. Then Abu Bakr came seeking permission to enter, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission while remaining in that state. Then Umar came seeking permission, and he gave him permission while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was still in that state. Then a group of his companions came, and he gave them permission. Then Ali came seeking permission, and he gave him permission while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was still in that state. Then Uthman came and sought permission, so he drew his garment over himself and then gave him permission. They spoke for a while and then left.I said, "Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr and Umar and Ali and a group of your companions came in to see you while you were in your state and you did not move, but when Uthman came in you covered yourself with your garment."He replied, "Should I not feel modesty before a man whom even the angels feel modesty before?"
حدثنا هاشم قال حدثنا أبو معاوية يعني شيبان عن أبي اليعفور عن عبد الله بن أبي سعيد المزني
دخل علي رسول الله ﷺ ذات يوم فوضع ثوبه بين فخذيه فجاء أبو بكر يستأذن فأذن له رسول الله ﷺ على هيئته ثم جاء عمر يستأذن فأذن له ورسول الله ﷺ على هيئته وجاء ناس من أصحابه فأذن لهم وجاء علي يستأذن فأذن له ورسول الله ﷺ على هيئته ثم جاء عثمان فاستأذن فتجلل ثوبه ثم أذن له فتحدثوا ساعة ثم خرجوا فقلت يا رسول الله دخل عليك أبو بكر وعمر وعلي وناس من أصحابك وأنت على هيئتك لم تتحرك فلما دخل عثمان تجللت ثوبك فقال ألا أستحيي ممن تستحيي منه الملائكة
