Ibn Abbas said, "Allah never granted victory in any battle as He granted victory on the day of Uhud."We found this surprising, so Ibn Abbas said, "Between me and whoever disputes this is the Book of Allah
. Allah
says regarding the day of Uhud, 'And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission' [Aal Imran 3:152]."Ibn Abbas said, "Al-hass means killing." He continued reciting, "...until when you lost courage..." up to His saying, "...but He has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers" [Aal Imran 3:152].He said, "This was meant for the archers specifically. The Prophet ﷺ had stationed them at a certain spot and said, 'Guard our backs. If you see us being killed, do not come to our aid, and if you see us gaining spoils, do not share with us.'When the Prophet ﷺ gained victory and they overran the camp of the polytheists, all the archers rushed down and entered the camp to plunder. The ranks of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had become like this," and he interlaced the fingers of his hands, "and they became confused. When the archers abandoned that gap they had been guarding, the cavalry came through that spot upon the companions of the Prophet ﷺ. They began striking one another and became entangled, and many of the Muslims were killed. The early part of the day had belonged to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions, until seven or nine of those carrying the standard of the polytheists had been killed. The Muslims made a charge toward the mountain, but they did not reach the place people call the cave. They were only beneath al-Mihras. Satan cried out, 'Muhammad has been killed,' and no one doubted that it was true. We continued in that state, having no doubt that he had been killed, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared between the two Saads. We recognized him by the way he tilted as he walked. We rejoiced as though nothing of what had befallen us had befallen us. He climbed up toward us saying, 'The wrath of Allah has intensified against a people who bloodied the face of His Messenger.' He said another time, 'O Allah, it is not for them to overcome us,' until he reached us.He stayed for a moment, and then Abu Sufyan called out from the foot of the mountain, 'Exalted be Hubal, exalted be Hubal,' meaning his gods. 'Where is the son of Abu Kabsha? Where is the son of Abu Quhafa? Where is the son of al-Khattab?'Umar said, 'Messenger of Allah, shall I not answer him?'He said, 'Yes.'When he said, 'Exalted be Hubal,' Umar said, 'Allah is more exalted and more majestic.'Abu Sufyan said, 'Son of al-Khattab, you have been favored,' and he turned away from her, or he avoided her. Then he said, 'Where is the son of Abu Kabsha? Where is the son of Abu Quhafa? Where is the son of al-Khattab?'Umar said, 'This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, this is Abu Bakr, and here I am, Umar.'Abu Sufyan said, 'A day for the day of Badr. Days alternate, and war goes by turns.'Umar said, 'They are not equal. Our slain are in Paradise and your slain are in the Fire.'He said, 'You claim that. We have surely failed and lost then.'Then Abu Sufyan said, 'You will find some mutilation among your slain. That was not by the decision of our leaders.' Then the zeal of jahiliyyah overtook him and he said, 'Even so, it did happen, and we did not disapprove of it.'"
