The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray thirteen rakahs at night. He would make five of them his witr, not sitting in any of them except in the last. When the muadhdhin called the adhan, he would rise and pray two brief rakahs.
حدثنا ابن نمير قال حدثنا هشام عن أبيه
كانت صلاة رسول الله ﷺ بالليل ثلاث عشرة ركعة يوتر من ذلك بخمس لا يجلس في شيء منها إلا في آخرها فإذا أذن المؤذن قام فصلى ركعتين خفيفتين
