The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sometimes become in a state of major ritual impurity during the night while intending to fast. He would sleep and wake up still in that state, then he would pour water over himself and perform ablution.
حدثنا ابن نمير عن عبد الملك عن عطاء
كان رسول الله ﷺ تصيبه الجنابة من الليل وهو يريد الصيام فينام ويستيقظ ويصبح جنبا فيفيض عليه من الماء ثم يتوضأ
