Ayesha reported,

I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ strike a servant of his, nor a wife of his, nor strike anything with his hand at all, except when fighting in the cause of Allah. Nothing was ever done against him for which he sought revenge from the one who did it, unless it was a violation of what Allah عز وجل had made sacred. If it was a violation of what Allah had made sacred, he would exact retribution for His sake. He was never given a choice between two matters without taking the easier of them, unless it involved sin. If it involved sin, he would be the furthest of people from it.
