I saw Umar holding a palm branch in his hand, seating the people, saying, "Listen to the words of the successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Then a freed slave of Abu Bakr
called Shadid came with a written document and read it out to the people. He said, "Abu Bakr
says, listen and obey what is in this document. By Allah, I have not fallen short in serving you."Qays said, "I saw Umar
after that upon the pulpit."
حدثنا وكيع عن ابن أبي خالد

Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Abu Khalid is Ismail. Qays is Ibn Abu Hazim. Shadid is a freedman of Abu Bakr, we do not know anything about him beyond this report, and Hafiz mentioned him in al-Isaba among those who lived to see the Prophet ﷺ 3:222-223, and it is quite possible, indeed more likely, that he was a companion. This hadith was narrated by Tabari in al-Tarikh 4:51-53 through the route of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Ismail bin Abu Khalid. Haythami said in 5/184, its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
