Ayesha reported,

We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ just as the crescent of Dhul-Hijjah was about to appear, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever wishes to enter the state of consecration for umrah may do so, and whoever wishes to enter it for Hajj may do so. Had I not brought a sacrificial animal with me, I would have entered it for umrah."Aisha said, "So some of them entered it for umrah and some for Hajj. I was among those who entered it for umrah, but I began menstruating before I reached Makkah, and the day of Arafah came upon me while I was still menstruating. I complained of this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, 'Set aside your umrah, undo your hair, comb it, and enter the state of consecration for Hajj.' So I did."Then, on the night of Hasbah, he sent Abdul-Rahman with me to Taneem, and he seated her behind him on his mount. She then entered the state of consecration for an umrah in place of her first one. So Allah عز وجل completed both her Hajj and her umrah, and none of this required a sacrificial animal, a fast, or a charitable offering.Waki narrated it as, "Bathe and enter the state of consecration for Hajj."Urwa said, So Allah عز وجل completed both her Hajj and her umrah.
