Ayesha reported,

Ayesha mentioned the women of the Ansar, praised them, and spoke well of them.She said, "When Surat an-Nur was revealed, they took to the borders of their waist-wrappers and tore them, then made head-coverings from them."She also said that one of those women came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked, "Messenger of Allah, tell me how to purify myself after menstruation."He replied, "Let one of you take her water and her lote-leaves and purify herself, doing so thoroughly. Then let her pour water over her head and rub it firmly into the roots of her hair. That is purification. Then let her pour water over her body. Then let her take a piece of cloth scented with musk and purify herself with it."She asked, "Messenger of Allah, how do I purify myself with it?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke of it indirectly out of modesty, so Ayesha said, "Trace with it the place where the blood was."Affan said in his version, "Then let her pour water over her head and press it into the roots of her hair, rubbing it." Affan also said, "to the border or borders."

عن عائشة قالت

ذكرت نساء الأنصار فأثنت عليهن وقالت لهن معروفا وقالت لما نزلت سورة النور عمدن إلى حجز أو حجوز مناطقهن فشققنه ثم اتخذن منه خمرا وأنها دخلت امرأة منهن على رسول الله ﷺ فقالت يا رسول الله أخبرني عن الطهور من المحيض فقال نعم لتأخذ إحداكن ماءها وسدرتها فلتطهر ثم لتحسن الطهور ثم تصب على رأسها ثم لتلزق بشؤون رأسها ثم تدلكه فإن ذلك طهور ثم تصب عليها من الماء ثم تأخذ فرصة ممسكة فلتطهر بها قالت يا رسول الله كيف أتطهر بها فكان رسول الله ﷺ يكني عن ذلك فقالت عائشة تتبع بها أثر الدم قال عفان ثم لتصب على رأسها من الماء ولتلصق شؤون رأسها فلتدلكه قال عفان إلى حجز أو حجوز
