She said, while recounting the affair of Khaybar, that the Prophet ﷺ used to send Ibn Rawaha to the Jews to estimate the date palms when the fruit had ripened, before any of it was eaten. The Jews were then given the choice either to take the harvest at that estimated value or to hand it over to the Muslims at that same estimate. The Prophet ﷺ only ordered the estimation so that the zakat could be calculated before the fruit was eaten and distributed.
حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا ابن جريج قال أخبرت عن ابن شهاب عن عروة
أنها قالت وهي تذكر شأن خيبر كان النبي ﷺ يبعث ابن رواحة إلى اليهود فيخرص عليهم النخل حين يطيب قبل أن يؤكل منه ثم يخيرون يهود أيأخذونه بذلك الخرص أم يدفعونه إليهم بذلك وإنما كان أمر النبي ﷺ بالخرص لكي يحصي الزكاة قبل أن تؤكل الثمرة ويفرق
