Sinan bin Salama and I went on Hajj together, and Sinan had a sacrificial camel with him. The camel became exhausted and unable to continue, and he was at a loss as to what to do with it. So I said, "When I reach Mecca, I will inquire about this matter."When we arrived in Mecca, I said, "Let us go to Ibn Abbas." We entered upon him and he had a slave-girl with him. I had two questions and my companion had one. He said, "Shall I send her away?"I said, "No."Then I said, "I had a sacrificial camel with me, and it became exhausted on us, so I said, 'When I reach Mecca, I will inquire about this matter.'"Ibn Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent sacrificial camels with so-and-so and gave him instructions concerning them. When the man set off, he came back and said, 'Messenger of Allah, what should I do with any of them that becomes exhausted?' He said, 'Slaughter it, dip its sandal in its blood, strike the side of its body with it, and neither you nor any of your companions may eat from it.'"Then I said to him, "I take part in these military campaigns and gain spoils. I want to free a slave on behalf of my mother. Will it suffice for her if I free a slave on her behalf?"Ibn Abbas said, "The wife of Salman bin Abdullah al-Juhani instructed him to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about her mother, who had died without performing Hajj. Would it suffice for her if she performed Hajj on her behalf? The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Tell me, if her mother had a debt and she paid it off on her behalf, would that suffice for her mother?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then let her perform Hajj on her mother's behalf.'"He also asked him about seawater, and he said, "The water of the sea is purifying."

Its chain of transmission is sahih, and it is the fuller version of 2189."La-astayqinanna" (I shall surely be certain) refers to the Bath (resurrection)."Qafa," with fatha on the qaf and a doubled fa, is explained in Nihayah as meaning "he turned and went away," as if derived from "qafa" (the back of the neck), meaning he showed him his neck and back. Properly it should be written with a ya, but here it is written in both original manuscripts with an alif, which is permissible. In the manuscript marked "ح" a hamza was placed above the alif, but this is an error with no basis. The final part of the hadith, concerning the water of the sea, was not seen by any of the authors of the six major books. It appears in Majma al-Zawaid 1:215–216, where it is attributed to Ahmad, who graded it sahih.
