Abu Khalaf, the freed slave of the Banu Jumah, told me that he went in with Ubayd bin Umayr to see Umm Muiminin Ayesha, and Ubayd bin Umayr asked her, "How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite this verse, 'those who do what they do' or 'those who give what they give'?" [Muminun 23:60]She said, "Which of the two do you prefer?"He replied, "By Allah, one of them is dearer to me than such and such."She asked, "Which one?"He said, "Those who do what they do."She said, "I bear witness that this is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite it, and that is how it was revealed, but the difference is only a matter of a single letter in the writing."
