I said to her, "What do you make of Allah's words 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah, so whoever performs Hajj to the House or performs Umrah, there is no blame upon him in going between them' [Baqarah 2:158]? By Allah, there would be no blame on anyone if he did not go between them."Ayesha replied, "What a wretched thing you have said, my nephew. If it were as you interpret it, it would have read, 'there is no blame upon him if he does not go between them.' Rather, it was revealed because the Ansar, before they embraced Islam, used to enter the state of consecration for the idol Manat, that tyrant which they worshipped at Mushallal. Whoever consecrated himself for it considered it a sin to make the circuit between Safa and Marwa. So they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this, saying, 'Messenger of Allah, in the days of ignorance we regarded it as a sin to go between Safa and Marwa.' Then Allah
revealed, 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah' up to His words, 'there is no blame upon him in going between them' [Baqarah 2:158]."Ayesha added, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then established going between them as sunnah, so it is not fitting for anyone to omit the tawaf between them."
