Ayesha reported,

Ayesha said, "I went out on the day of the Trench following the tracks of the people. I heard a heavy tread behind me, meaning the sound of the ground. I turned and saw Saad bin Muaz with his nephew Harith bin Aws, who was carrying his shield. I sat down on the ground, and Saad passed by wearing an iron coat of mail from which his extremities protruded, so I feared for Saad's extremities."She said, "Saad was one of the largest and tallest of men. He passed by reciting,Wait a little, let Jamal witness the battle. How fine is death when the appointed time has come.I got up and rushed into a garden, where there were a group of Muslims, among them Umar bin Khattab and a man wearing a sabghah, meaning a helmet."Umar said, "What brings you here? By my life, by Allah, you are bold indeed. What assures you that there will not be a calamity or a retreat?"She said, "He kept rebuking me until I wished the ground would split open for me at that moment so I could enter it. Then the man lifted the helmet from his face, and it was Talha bin Ubaydullah."Talha said, "Umar, woe to you, you have said too much today. Where is there to retreat or flee to except to Allah ?"She continued, "A man from the polytheists of Quraysh called Ibn al-Ariqah shot Saad with an arrow and said to him, 'Take this, I am Ibn al-Ariqah.' The arrow struck Saad's median vein and severed it. Saad called upon Allah saying, 'O Allah, do not let me die until You comfort my eyes regarding Banu Qurayza.'"She said, "They had been his allies and clients in the days of ignorance. His wound began to heal, and Allah sent a wind against the polytheists, and Allah sufficed the believers in fighting, and Allah is ever Strong and Mighty. Abu Sufyan and those with him departed to Tihama, and Uyayna bin Badr and those with him went to Najd, while Banu Qurayza returned and fortified themselves in their strongholds. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to Medina and laid down his arms, and he ordered a tent of leather to be pitched for Saad in the mosque."She said, "Then Jibreel came to him with traces of dust still on his front teeth and said, 'Have you laid down your arms? By Allah, the angels have not yet laid down theirs. Go out to Banu Qurayza and fight them.'"She continued, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put on his armor and announced to the people to set out. He passed by Banu Ghanm, who were neighbors of the mosque around it, and asked, 'Who passed by you?' They replied, 'Dihya Kalbi passed by us.' Dihya Kalbi resembled Jibreel in his beard, age, and face."She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and besieged them for twenty-five nights. When the siege intensified and the hardship grew severe, they were told, 'Surrender to the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' They consulted Abu Lubaba bin Abdul Mundhir, and he gestured to them that it meant slaughter. They said, 'We will surrender to the judgment of Saad bin Muaz.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Surrender to the judgment of Saad bin Muaz."So they came down, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Saad bin Muaz. He was brought on a donkey with a saddle of palm fiber, having been mounted on it, and his people surrounded him saying, "Abu Amr, your allies, your clients, the people of valor, and those whom you know."She said, "He gave them no reply and paid them no attention until, when he drew near their dwellings, he turned to his people and said, 'It is time for me not to care, in the cause of Allah, about the blame of any blamer.'"Abu Saeed said, "When he came in sight of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, 'Stand up for your master.' They helped him down."Umar said, "Our master is Allah ."He said, "Help him down," so they helped him down.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Pass judgment concerning them."Saad said, "I judge concerning them that their fighting men shall be killed, their offspring taken captive, and their wealth divided." Yazid said in Baghdad, "and divided."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You have judged concerning them with the judgment of Allah and the judgment of His Messenger."She said, "Then Saad supplicated, 'O Allah, if You have left anything of the war with Quraysh for Your Prophet ﷺ, then preserve me for it, and if You have ended the war between him and them, then take me to Yourself.' His wound burst open. It had healed so that nothing showed of it but a small mark. He returned to the tent that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had pitched for him."Ayesha said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and Umar attended to him. By the One in whose hand is Muhammad's soul, I could distinguish Umar's weeping from Abu Bakr's weeping while I was in my chamber. They were as Allah said, 'merciful among themselves' [Fath 48:29]."Alqama said, "I asked, 'Mother, what did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do?'"She replied, "His eye did not shed tears for anyone, but when he was grieved, he would only take hold of his beard."

حدثنا يزيد قال أخبرنا محمد بن عمرو عن أبيه عن جده علقمة بن وقاص قال أخبرتني

عائشة قالت

خرجت يوم الخندق أقفو آثار الناس قالت فسمعت وئيد الأرض ورائي يعني حس الأرض قالت فالتفت فإذا أنا بسعد بن معاذ ومعه ابن أخيه الحارث بن أوس يحمل مجنه قالت فجلست إلى الأرض فمر سعد وعليه درع من حديد قد خرجت منها أطرافه فأنا أتخوف على أطراف سعد قالت وكان سعد من أعظم الناس وأطولهم قالت فمر وهو يرتجز ويقول ليت قليلا يدرك الهيجا جمل ما أحسن الموت إذا حان الأجل قالت فقمت فاقتحمت حديقة فإذا فيها نفر من المسلمين وإذا فيهم عمر بن الخطاب وفيهم رجل عليه سبغة له يعني مغفرا فقال عمر ما جاء بك لعمري والله إنك لجريئة وما يؤمنك أن يكون بلاء أو يكون تحوز قالت فما زال يلومني حتى تمنيت أن الأرض انشقت لي ساعتئذ فدخلت فيها قالت فرفع الرجل السبغة عن وجهه فإذا طلحة بن عبيد الله فقال يا عمر ويحك إنك قد أكثرت منذ اليوم وأين التحوز أو الفرار إلا إلى الله عز وجل قالت ويرمي سعدا رجل من المشركين من قريش يقال له ابن العرقة بسهم له فقال له خذها وأنا ابن العرقة فأصاب أكحله فقطعه فدعا الله عز وجل سعد فقال اللهم لا تمتني حتى تقر عيني من قريظة قالت وكانوا حلفاءه ومواليه في الجاهلية قالت فرقى كلمه وبعث الله عز وجل الريح على المشركين فكفى الله عز وجل المؤمنين القتال وكان الله عز وجل قويا عزيزا فلحق أبو سفيان ومن معه بتهامة ولحق عيينة بن بدر ومن معه بنجد ورجعت بنو قريظة فتحصنوا في صياصيهم ورجع رسول الله ﷺ إلى المدينة فوضع السلاح وأمر بقبة من أدم فضربت على سعد في المسجد قالت فجاءه جبريل عليه السلام وإن على ثناياه لنقع الغبار فقال أقد وضعت السلاح والله ما وضعت الملائكة بعد السلاح اخرج إلى بني قريظة فقاتلهم قالت فلبس رسول الله ﷺ لأمته وأذن في الناس بالرحيل أن يخرجوا فخرج رسول الله ﷺ فمر على بني غنم وهم جيران المسجد حوله فقال من مر بكم فقالوا مر بنا دحية الكلبي وكان دحية الكلبي تشبه لحيته وسنه ووجهه جبريل عليه السلام فقالت فأتاهم رسول الله ﷺ فحاصرهم خمسا وعشرين ليلة فلما اشتد حصرهم واشتد البلاء قيل لهم انزلوا على حكم رسول الله ﷺ فاستشاروا أبا لبابة بن عبد المنذر فأشار إليهم أنه الذبح قالوا ننزل على حكم سعد بن معاذ فقال رسول الله ﷺ انزلوا على حكم سعد بن معاذ فنزلوا وبعث رسول الله ﷺ إلى سعد بن معاذ فأتي به على حمار عليه إكاف من ليف قد حمل عليه وحف به قومه فقالوا يا أبا عمرو حلفاؤك ومواليك وأهل النكاية ومن قد علمت قالت وأنى لا يرجع إليهم شيئا ولا يلتفت إليهم حتى إذا دنا من دورهم التفت إلى قومه فقال قد آن لي أن لا أبالي في الله لومة لائم قال قال أبو سعيد فلما طلع على رسول الله ﷺ قال قوموا إلى سيدكم فأنزلوه فقال عمر سيدنا الله عز وجل قال أنزلوه فأنزلوه قال رسول الله ﷺ احكم فيهم قال سعد فإني أحكم فيهم أن تقتل مقاتلتهم وتسبى ذراريهم وتقسم أموالهم وقال يزيد ببغداد ويقسم فقال رسول الله ﷺ لقد حكمت فيهم بحكم الله عز وجل وحكم رسوله قالت ثم دعا سعد قال اللهم إن كنت أبقيت على نبيك ﷺ من حرب قريش شيئا فأبقني لها وإن كنت قطعت الحرب بينه وبينهم فاقبضني إليك قالت فانفجر كلمه وكان قد برئ حتى ما يرى منه إلا مثل الخرص ورجع إلى قبته التي ضرب عليه رسول الله ﷺ قالت عائشة فحضره رسول الله ﷺ وأبو بكر وعمر قالت فوالذي نفس محمد بيده إني لأعرف بكاء عمر من بكاء أبي بكر وأنا في حجرتي وكانوا كما قال الله عز وجل {رحماء بينهم} قال علقمة قلت أي أمه فكيف كان رسول الله ﷺ يصنع قالت كانت عينه لا تدمع على أحد ولكنه كان إذا وجد فإنما هو آخذ بلحيته
