I saw the Prophet ﷺ standing at Arafat with Fadl mounted behind him. An Arabi came and stopped nearby with a slave-girl behind him. Fadl began to look at her, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed this and started turning his face away. Then he said, "People, righteousness is not in spurring horses or camels. You must maintain calm."Then he proceeded onward. I never saw his mount lift its hooves in a gallop until he reached Jam.When he stopped at Jam, he had Usama ride behind him, then said, "People, righteousness is not in spurring horses and camels. You must maintain calm."Then he proceeded onward, and I never saw his mount lift its hooves in a gallop until it reached Mina. The young boys of the family of Hashim came to us on their small donkeys, and he began striking our thighs and saying, "My sons, move along, but do not throw the pebbles at the Jamrah until the sun rises."
Its isnad is sahih. Uthman bin Muhammad is Ibn Abu Shayba, who was a contemporary of Ahmad, while Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed was one of Ahmad's teachers, but here he narrated from his teacher through an intermediary, one of his brethren, as is the custom of trustworthy scholars. The hadith is given at greater length under 2427. See also 2266 and 3042. "Duafa," spelled with alif maqsura, is the plural of daif.
