While I was with the Prophet ﷺ, a Jewish man asked permission to enter, and the Prophet ﷺ granted it. The man said, "As-samu alayka" (death be upon you).The Prophet ﷺ replied, "And upon you."I was about to speak. Then a second man entered and said the same thing, and the Prophet ﷺ again replied, "And upon you." Then a third entered and said, "As-samu alayka."I said, "Rather, death be upon you, and the wrath of Allah, you brothers of apes and swine. Do you greet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a greeting that Allah has not used for him?"He looked at me and said, "Stop. Allah does not love obscenity or vulgar speech. They said something, and we returned it back upon them, so nothing harmed us, while it remains binding upon them until the Day of Resurrection. They do not envy us for anything as much as they envy us for the Friday that Allah has guided us to and from which they have strayed, for the qibla that Allah has guided us to and from which they have strayed, and for our saying 'Ameen' behind the imam."
حدثنا علي بن عاصم عن حصين بن عبد الرحمن عن عمر بن قيس عن محمد بن الأشعث
بينا أنا عند النبي ﷺ إذ استأذن رجل من اليهود فأذن له فقال السام عليك فقال النبي ﷺ وعليك قالت فهممت أن أتكلم قالت ثم دخل الثانية فقال مثل ذلك فقال النبي ﷺ وعليك قالت ثم دخل الثالثة فقال السام عليك قالت فقلت بل السام عليكم وغضب الله إخوان القردة والخنازير أتحيون رسول الله ﷺ بما لم يحيه به الله قالت فنظر إلي فقال مه إن الله لا يحب الفحش ولا التفحش قالوا قولا فرددناه عليهم فلم يضرنا شيء ولزمهم إلى يوم القيامة إنهم لا يحسدونا على شيء كما يحسدونا على يوم الجمعة التي هدانا الله لها وضلوا عنها وعلى القبلة التي هدانا الله لها وضلوا عنها وعلى قولنا خلف الإمام آمين
