Ayesha reported,

Abu Bakr asked her, "On what day did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ die?"She said, "On a Monday."He said, "Whatever Allah wills. I hope it will be before nightfall."Then he asked, "What did you shroud him in?"She replied, "In three white Sahuli garments from Yemen, with no shirt and no turban among them."Abu Bakr said, "Look at this garment of mine. It has stains of saffron or red ochre on it. Wash it and put two other garments with it."Ayesha said, "Father, it is worn out."He said, "The living have more right to what is new. It is only going to receive the fluids of decay."Abdullah bin Abu Bakr had given them a striped garment, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been wrapped in it, but then they took him out of it and he was shrouded in three white garments. So Abdullah took the garment back and said, "I shall shroud myself in something that touched the skin of the Prophet ﷺ." But later he said, "By Allah, I will not shroud myself in something that Allah kept from being the shroud of His Prophet ﷺ."Abu Bakr died on the night of Tuesday and was buried at night. And when Ayesha died, Abdullah bin Zubayr buried her at night.

عن عائشة

أن أبا بكر قال لها في أي يوم مات رسول الله ﷺ فقالت في يوم الاثنين فقال ما شاء الله إني لا أرجو فيما بيني وبين الليل قال ففيم كفنتموه قالت في ثلاثة أثواب بيض سحولية يمانية ليس فيها قميص ولا عمامة وقال أبو بكر انظري ثوبي هذا فيه ردع زعفران أو مشق فاغسليه واجعلي معه ثوبين آخرين فقالت عائشة يا أبت هو خلق قال إن الحي أحق بالجديد وإنما هو للمهلة وكان عبد الله بن أبي بكر أعطاهم حلة حبرة فأدرج فيها رسول الله ﷺ ثم استخرجوه منها فكفن في ثلاثة أثواب بيض قال فأخذ عبد الله الحلة فقال لأكفنن نفسي في شيء مس جلد النبي ﷺ ثم قال بعد ذلك والله لا أكفن نفسي في شيء منعه الله عز وجل نبيه ﷺ أن يكفن فيه فمات ليلة الثلاثاء ودفن ليلا وماتت عائشة فدفنها عبد الله بن الزبير ليلا
