The Prophet ﷺ never used to recite any portion of the night prayer while sitting, until he grew old in age. When thirty or forty verses remained, he would stand, recite them, and then prostrate.
حدثنا عبد الرزاق قال أخبرنا سفيان عن هشام بن عروة عن أبيه
كان النبي ﷺ لا يقرأ في شيء من صلاة الليل جالسا حتى دخل في السن وكان إذا بقيت عليه ثلاثون آية أو أربعون قام فقرأها ثم سجد
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Bukhari related it in Fath al-Bari 3/33, no. 1148, in tahajjud, Muslim in 1/505, no. 731, in the travelers, Nasai in 3/223, no. 1658, in the night prayer, and Bayhaqi in 2/490, in the prayer.
