The wives of the Prophet ﷺ gathered with him one day and said, "Prophet of Allah, which of us will be the first to follow you?"He replied, "The one with the longest hand among you."So we took a reed and measured ourselves with it, and Sawda bint Zama turned out to have the longest forearm among us.She said, "When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Sawda was the first of us to follow him, and we then realized that the length of her hand referred to her generosity in giving charity. She was a woman who loved to give charity."Affan once said, "a reed which we measured ourselves with."
حدثنا عفان حدثنا أبو عوانة عن فراس عن عامر عن مسروق
اجتمع أزواج النبي ﷺ عنده ذات يوم فقلن يا نبي الله أيتنا أسرع بك لحوقا فقال أطولكن يدا فأخذنا قصبا فذرعناها فكانت سودة بنت زمعة أطولنا ذراعا فقالت توفي النبي ﷺ فكانت سودة أسرعنا به لحوقا فعرفنا بعد إنما كان طول يدها من الصدقة وكانت امرأة تحب الصدقة وقال عفان مرة قصبة نذرعها
Its isnad is sahih. Firas is Ibn Yahya Hamdani, and he is trustworthy, his hadith is found in the collections of the group. The hadith was narrated by Bukhari 3/285, no. 420 Fath, in zakat, Muslim 4/1907, no. 2452, in the virtues of the companions, and Nasai 5/66, no. 2541, in zakat.
