Ayesha reported,

The sun was eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the mosque. He stood and pronounced the takbir, and the people lined up in rows behind him. He recited a long recitation, then said the takbir and bowed for a long time. Then he said, "Allah hears whoever praises Him," and stood up without prostrating. He recited another long recitation, shorter than the first, then said the takbir and bowed for a long time, shorter than the first bowing. Then he said, "Allah hears whoever praises Him. Our Lord, to You belongs all praise," and prostrated. He did the same in the second rakah, completing four bowings and four prostrations. The sun had cleared before he finished. He then stood and praised Allah as He deserves to be praised, and said, "These two are signs among the signs of Allah . They are not eclipsed for the death or life of anyone. So when you see them, hasten to prayer."Kathir bin Abbas used to relate that Abdullah bin Abbas would narrate about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day the sun was eclipsed, similar to what Urwa narrated from Ayesha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ.I said to Urwa, "But your brother, on the day the sun was eclipsed in Medina, did no more than two rakahs like the dawn prayer."He replied, "Yes, he departed from the sunnah."

حدثنا بشر بن شعيب قال حدثني أبي عن الزهري قال أخبرني عروة بن الزبير أن

عائشة زوج النبي ﷺ قالت

كسفت الشمس في حياة رسول الله ﷺ فخرج رسول الله ﷺ إلى المسجد فقام فكبر وصف الناس وراءه فكبر واقترأ قراءة طويلة ثم كبر فركع ركوعا طويلا ثم قال سمع الله لمن حمده فقام ولم يسجد فاقترأ قراءة طويلة هي أدنى من القراءة الأولى ثم كبر وركع ركوعا طويلا هو أدنى من الركوع الأول ثم قال سمع الله لمن حمده ربنا لك الحمد ثم سجد ثم فعل في الركعة الأخرى مثل ذلك فاستكمل أربع ركعات وأربع سجدات وانجلت الشمس قبل أن ينصرف ثم قام فأثنى على الله عز وجل بما هو أهله ثم قال إنما هما آيتان من آيات الله عز وجل لا ينخسفان لموت أحد ولا لحياته فإذا رأيتموهما فافزعوا للصلاة وكان كثير بن عباس يحدث أن عبد الله بن عباس كان يحدث عن صلاة رسول الله ﷺ يوم كسفت الشمس مثل ما حدث عروة عن عائشة زوج النبي ﷺ فقلت لعروة فإن أخاك يوم كسفت الشمس بالمدينة لم يزد على ركعتين مثل صلاة الصبح فقال أجل إنه أخطأ السنة
