The Prophet ﷺ used to pray eleven units between the night prayer and the break of dawn, giving the closing salutation after every two units and concluding with a single unit of witr. He would remain in prostration for as long as it would take one of you to recite fifty verses. When the caller to prayer fell silent, he would rise and pray two brief units, then lie down on his right side until the caller came to him.
حدثنا أبو المغيرة حدثنا الأوزاعي حدثني الزهري عن عروة
كان النبي ﷺ يصلي فيما بين عشاء الآخرة إلى أن ينصدع الفجر إحدى عشرة ركعة يسلم في كل ركعتين ويوتر بواحدة ويمكث في سجوده بقدر ما يقرأ أحدكم بخمسين آية فإذا سكت المؤذن قام فركع ركعتين خفيفتين ثم اضطجع على شقه الأيمن حتى يأتيه المؤذن
