"Which of you saw the shooting star that fell last night?"I said, "I did."Then I added, "I was not in prayer, but I had been stung."He asked, "What did you do?"I replied, "I sought a ruqyah."He asked, "What made you do that?"I said, "A hadith that Shaybi narrated to us from Burayda al-Aslami, who said, 'There is no ruqyah except for the evil eye or a venomous sting.'"Saeed, meaning Ibn Jubayr, said, "He has done well who acts upon what he has heard."Then he said, Ibn Abbas narrated to us from the Prophet ﷺ that he said, "The nations were displayed before me. I saw a prophet with a small band of followers, a prophet with one man, and a prophet with no one at all. Then a great multitude appeared before me, and I said, 'This is my nation.' But I was told, 'This is Musa and his people. Look toward the horizon.' I looked, and there was a great multitude. Then I was told, 'Look to the other side,' and there was another great multitude. It was said, 'This is your nation, and among them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment.'"Then the Prophet ﷺ rose and went inside. The people began discussing among themselves, saying, "Who are these people who will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment?"Some said, "Perhaps they are those who accompanied the Prophet ﷺ."Others said, "Perhaps they are those who were born in Islam and never associated anything with Allah."They mentioned several other possibilities. Then the Prophet ﷺ came out to them and asked, "What were you discussing?"They told him what they had said. He said, "They are those who do not seek cauterization, do not seek ruqyah, do not believe in evil omens, and who place their trust in their Lord."Ukkasha bin Mihsan al-Asadi stood up and said, "Am I one of them, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "You are one of them."Then another man stood and said, "Am I one of them, Messenger of Allah?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ukkasha has preceded you in that."
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari narrated it at length and in abridged form, 10:130-131, 179-180, and 11:352-358. Muslim narrated it, 1:78-79, from Saeed bin Mansur, from Hushaym.Regarding "ayn" (the evil eye), Ibn Athir said, it is said that so-and-so was struck by "ayn" when an enemy or an envious person looked at him and it affected him, causing him to fall ill because of it. From this comes the expression "aanahu bi-aynihi," meaning he struck him with the evil eye, so he is called "aain" (the one who casts it), and the one afflicted is called "maeen," meaning with the mim vocalized as fatha.Regarding "humah," it is with damma on the ha and the mim unshaddaded, though it is also said with the mim shaddaded, a reading Azhari rejected. It means poison. Ibn Athir said, it is also applied to the scorpion's stinger by extension, since the poison comes out from it.Regarding "the man and the two men," this is how it appears in both original manuscripts, while in Sahih Muslim it reads "and the two men."Regarding "with their statement," this is how it appears in H, while in K it reads "with their statements."Regarding "you are among them," in H it reads "you are within them," and we corrected it based on K and Sahih Muslim. Then "the other one said," in K it reads "then another man stood up."Regarding "Ukashah," it is with damma on the ain and shadda on the kaf, though it may also be read unshaddaded. He is Ukashah bin Mihsan Asadi, one of the earliest converts, who was present at Badr and was martyred fighting the people of apostasy. This story, or something similar to it, is also established in Sahih Muslim and other sources through the hadith of Abu Hurairah and through the hadith of Imran bin Husayn. Something similar will also come through the hadith of Ibn Masud, 3806, 3819, 3987.
