Abdullah bin Abbas reported,
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "News is not like seeing with one's own eyes. Allah 
informed Musa of what his people had done with the calf, yet he did not throw down the tablets. But when he saw with his own eyes what they had done, he threw down the tablets and they broke."

Sahihحدثنا سريج بن النعمان حدثنا هشيم عن أبي بشر عن سعيد بن جبير
عن ابن عباس قال
قال رسول الله ﷺ ليس الخبر كالمعاينة إن الله عز وجل أخبر موسى بما صنع قومه في العجل فلم يلق الألواح فلما عاين ما صنعوا ألقى الألواح فانكسرت
Its isnad is sahih, and it is the longer version of 1842. This longer version was cited by Ibn Kathir in the Tafsir 3:558 in similar wording from Ibn Abu Hatim, and Suyuti mentioned it in Durr Manthur 3:127, attributing it also to Abd bin Humayd, Bazzar, Ibn Hibban, Tabarani, Abu Shaykh, and Ibn Mardawayh. Hakim related it in 2:321 through Siraj, and graded it sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
