The Prophet ﷺ used to pray eleven units between the night prayer and dawn, giving the closing salutation after every two units and praying a single unit of witr. He would prolong his prostration during these voluntary prayers for about as long as it would take one of you to recite fifty verses before raising his head. Once the muezzin had finished the first call to the dawn prayer, he would rise and pray two brief units, then lie down on his right side until the muezzin came to him, and he would go out with him to the prayer.
