A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "May my father and mother be ransomed for you. My son and I bought the fruit of so-and-so's orchard. We counted it and gathered it. By the One who has honored you with what He has honored you with, we took nothing from it except what we ate ourselves or fed to a poor person, hoping for blessing. Yet it fell short of what we owed him. So we came asking him to reduce the amount of the shortfall, but he swore by Allah that he would not reduce anything for us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said three times, "He has sworn that he will do no good."This reached the owner of the dates, so he came to him and said, "May my father and mother be ransomed for you. If you wish, I will waive the shortfall, and if you wish, I will deduct whatever you wish from the principal." So he waived the shortfall.Abu Abdul-Rahman said, "I also heard it from Hakam."
