The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away without appointing anyone as his successor. Had he appointed a successor, he would have chosen Abu Bakr or Umar.
حدثنا وكيع حدثنا أبو العميس عن ابن أبي مليكة
قبض رسول الله ﷺ ولم يستخلف أحدا ولو كان مستخلفا أحدا لاستخلف أبا بكر أو عمر

Its isnad is sahih. Abu Umays is Utba bin Abdullah Masudi, and he is well known and reliable, known by both his name and his kunya, and his hadith is found in the collections of all six. The hadith was narrated by Muslim, 4/1856, no. 2385, and by Nasai in Sunan al-Kubra, 5/39, no. 8118.
