The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Call one of my companions to me."I said, "Abu Bakr?"He said, "No."I said, "Umar?"He said, "No."I said, "Your cousin Ali?"He said, "No."I said, "Uthman?"He said, "Yes."When Uthman came, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Move closer." He began to confide something to him, and the color of Uthman's face was changing.Then on the Day of the House, when Uthman was besieged within it, we said, "Commander of the Believers, will you not fight?"He said, "No. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted me with a covenant, and I shall hold myself patient upon it."
حدثنا يحيى عن إسماعيل قال حدثنا قيس عن أبي سهلة
قال رسول الله ﷺ ادعوا لي بعض أصحابي قلت أبو بكر قال لا قلت عمر قال لا قلت ابن عمك علي قال لا قالت قلت عثمان قال نعم فلما جاء قال تنحي جعل يساره ولون عثمان يتغير فلما كان يوم الدار وحصر فيها قلنا يا أمير المؤمنين ألا تقاتل قال لا إن رسول الله ﷺ عهد إلي عهدا وإني صابر نفسي عليه
Its isnad is sahih. Qays is Ibn Abu Hazim, and he is a well-known reliable narrator whose hadith appears in the collections of the group. Abu Sahla is the freed slave of Uthman, and he is reliable, having been deemed reliable by Ajli and Ibn Hibban. The hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah, 1/42, no. 113, in the introduction. Busiri said, "Its isnad is sahih, its narrators are reliable."
