During his illness, people came to visit the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he led them in prayer while seated. They began to pray standing, so he gestured to them to sit down. When he finished, he said, "The imam is appointed only to be followed. When he bows, bow. When he rises, rise. And when he prays seated, pray seated."
حدثنا يحيى عن هشام بن عروة قال أخبرني أبي قال
أن رسول الله ﷺ دخل عليه الناس في مرضه يعودونه فصلى بهم جالسا فجعلوا يصلون قياما فأشار إليهم أن اجلسوا فلما فرغ قال إنما جعل الإمام ليؤتم به فإذا ركع فاركعوا وإذا رفع فارفعوا وإذا صلى جالسا فصلوا جلوسا
