Stopping at al-Abtah is not a sunnah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only stopped there because it made his departure easier.
حدثنا عبدة بن سليمان قال حدثنا هشام عن أبيه
إن نزول الأبطح ليس بسنة إنما نزله رسول الله ﷺ لأنه كان أسمح لخروجه
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari narrated it 3/591 no. 765, Muslim 2/951 no. 1311, Tirmidhi 3/200 no. 853, saying, hasan sahih, and Abu Dawud 2/209 no. 2008, all of them in Hajj.
