Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he would murmur something that we could not make out, and he would not tell us what it was.He asked, "Did you notice me doing this?"We said, "Yes."He said, "I was reminded of one of the prophets who was given a great army from his people. He said, 'Who can match these in battle?' or 'Who can stand against these?' or words to that effect. Then it was revealed to him, 'Choose for your people one of three. Either We shall set upon them an enemy from outside their ranks, or famine, or death.' So he consulted his people about it, and they said, 'You are the prophet of Allah, so the whole matter is yours. Choose for us.'He rose to pray, and whenever they were alarmed by something, they would resort to prayer. He prayed as long as Allah willed, then said, 'My Lord, as for an enemy from outside, no. As for famine, no. But death.' So death was sent upon them, and seventy thousand of them died.What you see me murmuring is that I am saying, 'O Allah, by You I fight and by You I attack, and there is no power and no strength except through Allah.'"
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي حدثنا سليمان بن المغيرة عن ثابت عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى
كان رسول الله ﷺ إذا صلى همس شيئا لا أفهمه ولا يخبرنا به قال أفطنتم لي قلنا نعم قال إني ذكرت نبيا من الأنبياء أعطي جنودا من قومه فقال من يكافئ هؤلاء أو من يقوم لهؤلاء أو غيرها من الكلام فأوحي إليه أن اختر لقومك إحدى ثلاث إما أن نسلط عليهم عدوا من غيرهم أو الجوع أو الموت فاستشار قومه في ذلك فقالوا أنت نبي الله فكل ذلك إليك خر لنا فقام إلى الصلاة وكانوا إذا فزعوا فزعوا إلى الصلاة فصلى ما شاء الله قال ثم قال أي رب أما عدو من غيرهم فلا أو الجوع فلا ولكن الموت فسلط عليهم الموت فمات منهم سبعون ألفا فهمسي الذي ترون أني أقول اللهم بك أقاتل وبك أصاول ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله
