Suhayb used the kunya Abu Yahya, claimed to be of Arab descent, and used to feed people generously with abundant food.Umar said to him, "Suhayb, why do you go by the kunya Abu Yahya when you have no son? Why do you claim to be from the Arabs? And why do you give away so much food, which is wasteful with wealth?"Suhayb replied, "As for the kunya, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself gave me the kunya Abu Yahya. As for my lineage, I am a man from Namir bin Qasit, from the people of Mosul, but I was taken captive as a young boy after I had forgotten my family and people. As for the food, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, 'The best of you are those who feed others and return greetings of peace.' That is what moves me to feed people."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي عن زهير عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل
أن صهيبا كان يكنى أبا يحيى ويقول إنه من العرب ويطعم الطعام الكثير فقال له عمر يا صهيب ما لك تكنى أبا يحيى وليس لك ولد وتقول إنك من العرب وتطعم الطعام الكثير وذلك سرف في المال فقال صهيب إن رسول الله ﷺ كناني أبا يحيى وأما قولك في النسب فأنا رجل من النمر بن قاسط من أهل الموصل ولكني سبيت غلاما صغيرا قد غفلت أهلي وقومي وأما قولك في الطعام فإن رسول الله ﷺ كان يقول خياركم من أطعم الطعام ورد السلام فذلك الذي يحملني على أن أطعم الطعام
