The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the two units of prayer before Fajr the Opening of the Book along with the two verses from the end of al-Baqarah in the first unit, and in the second unit he would recite the Opening of the Quran along with the verse from Aal Imran, "Say, People of the Book, come to a word common between us and you" [Aal Imran 3:64], reciting until the end of the verse.

Its chain is daif, due to the obscurity of its narrator from Ibn Abbas. Abbas bin Abdullah bin Mabad bin Abbas is trustworthy, Ibn Main and others declared him trustworthy, and Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 4/1/8, quoting from Ibn Uyayna, who said, "He was a righteous man." Suyuti quoted the hadith in Durr Manthur 1:379 and attributed it to Abu Yaala alone, and Haythami did not mention it in Majma al-Zawaid. He probably found it sufficient to rely on what Ahmad had already narrated earlier with two chains, 2038 and 2040, and what Muslim narrated, 1:201–202, also with two chains, through Uthman bin Hakeem, from Saeed bin Yasar, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite in the two rakahs of Fajr, "Say, We believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us", and the verse in Al Imran, "Come to a word equitable between us and you" [Al Imran 3:64]. The first verse is verse 136 of Surah Baqarah. Abu Dawud also narrated it, 1:487, and Munziri attributed it to Nasai. The two hadiths are close in wording, and it appears that the unnamed narrator here made an error in relating one of the two verses.
