Abu Rafi said, "Quraysh sent me to the Prophet ﷺ. When I saw the Prophet ﷺ, Islam settled in my heart, so I said, 'Messenger of Allah, I will not return to them.'"The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I do not break a covenant, nor do I detain envoys. Return to them, and if what is in your heart now remains, then come back."Bukayr said, Hasan informed me that Abu Rafi was a Copt.
حدثنا عبد الجبار بن محمد الخطابي حدثنا عبد الله بن وهب عن عمرو بن الحارث أن بكير بن عبد الله حدثه عن الحسن بن علي بن أبي رافع عن أبيه
بعثتني قريش إلى النبي ﷺ قال فلما رأيت النبي ﷺ وقع في قلبي الإسلام فقلت يا رسول الله لا أرجع إليهم قال إني لا أخيس بالعهد ولا أخيس البر وارجع إليهم فإن كان في قلبك الذي فيه الآن فارجع قال بكير وأخبرني الحسن أن أبا رافع كان قبطيا
Its isnad is sahih, but it contains an insertion made by some narrators, who reported it from Hasan bin Ali bin Abu Rafi from his father from his grandfather, when in fact it is from his grandfather directly, as found in Hakim 3/598, where he graded it sahih, and Dhahabi said nothing about it. It is also found in Abu Dawud likewise, 3/82, number 2758, in the chapter on jihad.
