A man passed by a group of people and greeted them, and they returned his greeting. When he had moved on, one of them said, "By Allah, I truly hate this man for the sake of Allah."The others in the gathering said, "By Allah, what an awful thing you have said! By Allah, we shall inform him of it. Stand up, so-and-so," naming one of them, "and tell him."Their messenger caught up with the man and told him what had been said. So the man turned back and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I passed by a gathering of Muslims, among whom was so-and-so. I greeted them and they returned the greeting. After I had passed them, one of them caught up with me and told me that so-and-so had said, 'By Allah, I truly hate this man for the sake of Allah.' Please summon him and ask him why he hates me."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the man and asked him about what had been reported. He admitted it and said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah, I did say that to him."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Why do you hate him?"He replied, "I am his neighbor and know him well. By Allah, I have never seen him pray any prayer except this prescribed prayer that both the righteous and the sinful perform."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, ask him whether he has ever seen me delay it past its time, or perform its ablution poorly, or perform its bowing and prostration poorly."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him about that, and he said, "No."Then he said, "By Allah, I have never seen him fast except in this month that both the righteous and the sinful fast."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, has he ever seen me break my fast in it, or fall short in fulfilling its rights?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, and he said, "No."Then he said, "By Allah, I have never seen him give anything to a beggar, nor have I seen him spend any of his wealth in the way of Allah for any good cause, except this obligatory charity that both the righteous and the sinful pay."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, ask him whether I have ever withheld any of the Zakat or haggled with the one who came to collect it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him about that, and he said, "No."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Get up. For all I know, he may be better than you."

أن رجلا مر على قوم فسلم عليهم فردوا عليه السلام فلما جاوزهم قال رجل منهم والله إني لأبغض هذا في الله فقال أهل المجلس بئس والله ما قلت أما والله لننبئنه قم يا فلان رجلا منهم فأخبره قال فأدركه رسولهم فأخبره بما قال فانصرف الرجل حتى أتى رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله مررت بمجلس من المسلمين فيهم فلان فسلمت عليهم فردوا السلام فلما جاوزتهم أدركني رجل منهم فأخبرني أن فلانا قال والله إني لأبغض هذا الرجل في الله فادعه فسله على ما يبغضني فدعاه رسول الله ﷺ فقال فسأله عما أخبره الرجل فاعترف بذلك وقال قد قلت له ذلك يا رسول الله فقال رسول الله ﷺ فلم تبغضه قال أنا جاره وأنا به خابر والله ما رأيته يصلي صلاة قط إلا هذه الصلاة المكتوبة التي يصليها البر والفاجر قال الرجل سله يا رسول الله هل رآني قط أخرتها عن وقتها أو أسأت الوضوء لها أو أسأت الركوع والسجود فيها فسأله رسول الله ﷺ عن ذلك فقال لا ثم قال والله ما رأيته يصوم قط إلا هذا الشهر الذي يصومه البر والفاجر قال يا رسول الله هل رآني قط أفطرت فيه أو انتقصت من حقه شيئا فسأله رسول الله ﷺ فقال لا ثم قال والله ما رأيته يعطي سائلا قط ولا رأيته ينفق من ماله شيئا في شيء من سبيل الله بخير إلا هذه الصدقة التي يؤديها البر والفاجر قال فسله يا رسول الله هل كتمت من الزكاة شيئا قط أو ماكست فيها طالبها قال فسأله رسول الله ﷺ عن ذلك فقال لا فقال له رسول الله ﷺ قم إن أدري لعله خير منك
