He told him three hadith that he had memorized from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.He said, I said, "Messenger of Allah, we are a people who have only recently left the days of ignorance, and Allah has now brought Islam. Among us are men who practice divination by drawing lines in the sand."He replied, "There was a prophet among the prophets who used to draw lines. So whoever's lines coincide with his, that is valid."I said, "Among us are men who take omens from birds."He said, "That is something they find in their breasts. Do not let it deter you."I said, "Among us are men who consult soothsayers."He said, "Do not go to them."He said, This is one hadith.He continued, I had some sheep, and a slave-girl of mine used to tend them in the area facing Uhud and Jawwaniyya. One day I went to check on them and found that a wolf had taken one of the sheep. I am a man from the children of Adam, and I grow upset just as they grow upset, so I struck her a single blow.Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he regarded the matter as serious.I said, "Messenger of Allah, should I not free her?"He said, "Bring her to me."So I brought her, and he asked her, "Where is Allah?"She said, "In the heavens."He asked, "Who am I?"She said, "You are the Messenger of Allah."He said, "She is a believer. Free her."He said, These are two hadith.He continued, One day I was praying behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man among the people sneezed, and I said, "May Allah have mercy on you."The people shot me sharp glances, so I said, "May my mother lose me, what is the matter with you that you stare at me?"They began striking their thighs with their hands. When I saw that they were trying to silence me, I fell quiet, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer and called me over.May my father and mother be sacrificed for him, I have never seen a teacher before him or after him better at instruction than he was. He did not strike me, nor scold me, nor revile me. He simply said, "This prayer is not a place for any of the speech of people. It is only glorification, magnification, and recitation of the Quran," or as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said.These are the three hadith he related to me.
حدثنا عفان حدثنا همام سمعت يحيى بن أبي كثير عن هلال بن أبي ميمونة أن عطاء بن يسار حدثه أن
حدثه بثلاثة أحاديث حفظها عن رسول الله ﷺ قال فقلت يا رسول الله إنا قوم حديث عهد بجاهلية وإن الله عز وجل قد جاء بالإسلام وإن منا رجالا يخطون قال قد كان نبي من الأنبياء يخط فمن وافق خطه فذلك قال قلت إن منا رجالا يتطيرون قال ذاك شيء يجدونه في صدورهم فلا يصدنكم قال قلت إن منا رجالا يأتون الكهان قال فلا تأتوهم قال فهذا حديث قال وكانت لي غنم فيها جارية لي ترعاها في قبل أحد والجوانية فاطلعت عليها ذات يوم فوجدت الذئب قد ذهب منها بشاة فأسفت وأنا رجل من بني آدم آسف مثل ما يأسفون وإني صككتها صكة قال فعظم ذلك على رسول الله ﷺ قال قلت يا رسول الله أفلا أعتقها قال ادعها فدعوتها فقال لها أين الله قالت في السماء قال من أنا قالت أنت رسول الله قال إنها مؤمنة فأعتقها قال هذان حديثان قال فصليت خلف رسول الله ﷺ ذات يوم فعطس رجل من القوم فقلت يرحمك الله فرماني القوم بأبصارهم فقلت وا ثكل أمياه ما شأنكم تنظرون إلي قال فضربوا بأيديهم على أفخاذهم فلما رأيتهم يصمتوني سكت حتى صلى رسول الله ﷺ فدعاني قال فبأبي وأمي ما رأيت معلما قبله ولا بعده أحسن تعليما منه فما ضربني ولا كهرني ولا سبني وقال إن هذه الصلاة لا يصلح فيها شيء من كلام الناس هذا إنما هي التسبيح والتكبير وقراءة القرآن أو كما قال رسول الله ﷺ هذه ثلاثة أحاديث حدثنيها
