I was with Salman Farsi when he saw a man who had broken his ablution and was about to take off his leather socks. Salman instructed him to wipe over his leather socks and over his turban, and to wipe his forelock.Salman said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wipe over his leather socks and over his head-covering."

كنت مع سلمان الفارسي فرأى رجلا قد أحدث وهو يريد أن ينزع خفيه فأمره سلمان أن يمسح على خفيه وعلى عمامته ويمسح بناصيته وقال سلمان رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يمسح على خفيه وعلى خماره
Its isnad is hasan. Dawud bin Abu Furat Kindi is trustworthy, and his hadiths appear in Bukhari. The rest are acceptable, and their hadiths appear only in Ibn Majah. Muhammad bin Zayd bin Ali Kindi, Abu Shurayh Kindi, and Abu Muslim Abdi were deemed trustworthy by Ibn Hibban, while others considered them unknown. Regarding all of them, Taqrib states, acceptable.The hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah, 1/186, no. 563, in the book of Purification, and the hadith about wiping over the socks has come up many times before.
