Abu Humayd al-Saidi reported that the Prophet ﷺ appointed a man from the Azd tribe, known as Ibn al-Lutbiyya, to collect the zakat. When he returned, he said, "This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood on the pulpit and said, "What is the matter with an official whom we send out, and he comes back saying, 'This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift'? Why didn't he just sit in the house of his father or mother and see whether gifts would be given to him or not? By the One in whose hand is Muhammad's soul, none of you takes anything from it without bringing it on the Day of Resurrection carried on his neck, whether it be a camel that grunts, a cow that lows, or a sheep that bleats."Then he raised his hands until we could see the whiteness of his armpits, and said, "O Allah, have I conveyed the message?" three times.Hisham bin Urwa added that Abu Humayd said, "My ears heard it and my eyes saw it. Ask Zayd bin Thabit."
