Muhammad bin Kaab reported,

A young man from Kufa said to Huzaifa bin Yaman, "Abu Abdullah, you saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and kept his company?"He replied, "Yes, my nephew."The young man asked, "How did you conduct yourselves with him?"Huzaifa said, "By Allah, we exerted ourselves greatly."The young man said, "By Allah, had we lived in his time, we would not have let him walk upon the ground. We would have carried him on our shoulders."Huzaifa said, "My nephew, by Allah, I saw us with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the Battle of the Trench. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for a long portion of the night, then turned to us and said, 'Who will rise and go scout for us what the enemy is doing?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ promised that whoever went and returned, Allah would admit him into Paradise. Yet not a single man stood up.Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for another long portion of the night, then turned to us and said, 'Who will rise and go scout for us what the enemy is doing, then return? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ promises him a safe return, and I ask Allah that he be my companion in Paradise.' Still not a single man among the people stood up, due to the intensity of the fear, the severity of hunger, and the bitterness of the cold. When no one rose, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me by name, and I had no choice but to stand once he summoned me. He said, 'Huzaifa, go and slip in among the enemy and see what they are doing, but do not do anything until you return to us.'So I set off and entered among them, while the wind and the soldiers of Allah were doing what they were doing to them. No cooking pot of theirs could remain settled, no fire could stay lit, and no shelter could stand. Then Abu Sufyan bin Harb stood up and said, 'People of Quraysh, let each man look to the one sitting beside him.'"Huzaifa continued, "I quickly took the hand of the man next to me and asked, 'Who are you?' He answered, 'I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so.'Then Abu Sufyan said, 'People of Quraysh, by Allah, you are not in a place where you can remain. The horses have perished, Banu Qurayza have broken their pact with us, news has reached us from them of what we dislike, and we have suffered from this wind what you can see. By Allah, no pot of ours can stay still, no fire can burn for us, and no structure of ours can hold. So depart, for I am departing.'He then went to his camel, which was hobbled, mounted it, and struck it. It sprang up still bound on three legs, and he did not loosen its hobble until it was already standing. Were it not for the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ instruction not to do anything until I returned to him, I could have killed Abu Sufyan with an arrow had I wished."Huzaifa said, "I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was standing in prayer wrapped in a patterned cloak belonging to one of his wives. When he saw me, he drew me close into his garment and threw an end of the cloak over me. He bowed and prostrated while I was still wrapped in it. When he gave the closing salam, I told him the news. Ghatafan also heard what Quraysh had done and hurried back to their lands."
