Whenever we were present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a meal, we would not put our hands to the food until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began and placed his hand first.Once we were present with him at a meal when a Jariya came rushing in as though being pushed forward, and she went to put her hand into the food. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of her hand. Then an Arabi came as though being pushed, and he went to put his hand into the food, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of his hand as well. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Satan considers food lawful for himself when the name of Allah is not mentioned over it. He brought this Jariya in order to make the food lawful through her, but I seized her hand. And he brought this Arabi in order to make it lawful through him, but I seized his hand. By the One in whose hand my soul is, his hand was in my hand along with their hands," meaning Satan's hand.
