He reported that one of the Banu Mudlij told him that they used to ride out on rafts at sea to fish, carrying with them water for the journey. The time of prayer would come upon them while they were at sea, so they mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, saying, "If we perform ablution with our drinking water, we will go thirsty, but if we perform ablution with seawater, we feel uneasy about it."He said to them, "Its water is pure, and its dead creatures are lawful to eat."

أنه أخبره أن بعض بني مدلج أخبره أنهم كانوا يركبون الأرماث في البحر للصيد فيحملون معهم ماء للسفر فتدركهم الصلاة وهم في البحر وأنهم ذكروا ذلك للنبي ﷺ فقالوا إن نتوضأ بمائنا عطشنا وإن نتوضأ بماء البحر وجدنا في أنفسنا فقال لهم هو الطهور ماؤه الحلال ميتته
