When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ encamped at the fortress of the people of Khaybar, he handed the banner to Umar bin Khattab, and a group of the Muslims set out with him. They engaged the people of Khaybar in battle. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Tomorrow I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love."The next day, he called for Ali, who was suffering from sore eyes. He spat into his eyes, handed him the banner, and the people set out with him. Ali met the people of Khaybar, and there was Marhab striding before them, chanting,"Khaybar knows well that I am Marhab, fully armed, a tested warrior bold. Sometimes I thrust, and sometimes I strike, when the lions advance, blazing in fury."He and Ali exchanged two blows, and Ali struck him on the crown of his head until the sword bit into his teeth. The people of the camp heard the sound of the blow. The last of the men had not yet caught up with Ali before the fortress was opened for him and for them.

Its isnad is sahih. But there is a difficulty here, because Maymun the Kurd is known by the kunya Abu Basir, not Abu Abdullah. Nor is the Kurd mentioned among those who narrated from Abdullah bin Burayda. The Kurd was deemed trustworthy by the scholars. As for Maymun Abu Abdullah, who is also called Maymun bin Ustad, the scholars judged him weak. The implication is that someone failed to distinguish between the two men, and this is what the critics have said. Abu Hatim did distinguish between them. In any case, the hadith is sahih, as has already been established many times before. See 22889 and 22719.
