Abu Burayda reported,

I once hated Ali with a hatred no one had ever felt before. I also loved a certain man from Quraysh, and I loved him only because of his hatred for Ali.That man was sent out in command of a cavalry unit, and I accompanied him for no reason other than his hatred for Ali. We captured some prisoners, and he wrote to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Send us someone to take out the fifth."So he sent us Ali. Among the captives was a slave girl who was the finest of them all. Ali took out the fifth and distributed the rest, and when he came out his head was covered.We said, "Abu Hasan, what is this?"He replied, "Did you not see the slave girl who was among the captives? I distributed the shares and took out the fifth, and she ended up in the fifth, then she ended up with the household of the Prophet ﷺ, then she ended up with the family of Ali, and I had relations with her."The man wrote to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ about it. I said, "Send me." So he sent me to confirm the report.I began reading the letter aloud, saying, "He speaks the truth," but he took hold of my hand and the letter and said, "Do you hate Ali?"I said, "Yes."He said, "Do not hate him. And if you love him, then love him even more. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the share of the family of Ali in the fifth is greater than a slave girl."After hearing those words from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, no one was more beloved to me than Ali.Abdullah said, "By the One besides whom there is no god, between me and the Prophet ﷺ in this hadith there is no one but Abu Burayda."

حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد حدثنا عبد الجليل قال انتهيت إلى حلقة فيها أبو مجلز وابن بريدة فقال عبد الله بن بريدة حدثني

أبي بريدة قال

أبغضت عليا بغضا لم يبغضه أحد قط قال وأحببت رجلا من قريش لم أحبه إلا على بغضه عليا قال فبعث ذلك الرجل على خيل فصحبته ما أصحبه إلا على بغضه عليا قال فأصبنا سبيا قال فكتب إلى رسول الله ﷺ ابعث إلينا من يخمسه قال فبعث إلينا عليا وفي السبي وصيفة هي أفضل من السبي فخمس وقسم فخرج رأسه مغطى فقلنا يا أبا الحسن ما هذا قال ألم تروا إلى الوصيفة التي كانت في السبي فإني قسمت وخمست فصارت في الخمس ثم صارت في أهل بيت النبي ﷺ ثم صارت في آل علي ووقعت بها قال فكتب الرجل إلى نبي الله ﷺ فقلت ابعثني فبعثني مصدقا قال فجعلت أقرأ الكتاب وأقول صدق قال فأمسك يدي والكتاب وقال أتبغض عليا قال قلت نعم قال فلا تبغضه وإن كنت تحبه فازدد له حبا فوالذي نفس محمد بيده لنصيب آل علي في الخمس أفضل من وصيفة قال فما كان من الناس أحد بعد قول رسول الله ﷺ أحب إلي من علي قال عبد الله فوالذي لا إله غيره ما بيني وبين النبي ﷺ في هذا الحديث غير أبي بريدة
