Burayda reported,

Burayda went out one evening when the Prophet ﷺ met him, took him by the hand, and brought him into the mosque. There they heard the voice of a man reciting.The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you think he is showing off?"Burayda kept silent. Then they heard a man supplicating, saying, "O Allah, I ask You by my testimony that You are Allah, there is no god but You, the One, the Eternal Refuge, who has not begotten and was not begotten, and to whom none is equal."The Prophet ﷺ said, "By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, he has asked Allah by His Greatest Name, the Name by which when He is asked He gives, and when He is called upon He answers."The next evening, Burayda went out and the Prophet ﷺ met him again, took him by the hand, and brought him into the mosque. There again was the voice of the man reciting.The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you say he is showing off?"Burayda replied, "Do you say he is showing off, Messenger of Allah?"The Prophet ﷺ said, "No, rather a believer turning to Allah. No, rather a believer turning to Allah."Then they heard al-Ashari reciting with his beautiful voice in another part of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed al-Ashari," or he said, "indeed Abdullah bin Qays has been given one of the flutes of Dawud."I said, "Shall I not inform him, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "Yes, inform him."So I told him, and he said, "You are a true friend to me. You have related to me a saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

حدثنا عثمان بن عمر أخبرنا مالك

عن ابن بريدة عن أبيه قال

خرج بريدة عشاء فلقيه النبي ﷺ فأخذ بيده فأدخله المسجد فإذا صوت رجل يقرأ فقال النبي ﷺ تراه مرائيا فأسكت بريدة فإذا رجل يدعو فقال اللهم إني أسألك بأني أشهد أنك أنت الله الذي لا إله إلا أنت الأحد الصمد الذي لم يلد ولم يولد ولم يكن له كفوا أحد فقال النبي ﷺ والذي نفس محمد بيده لقد سأل الله باسمه الأعظم الذي إذا سئل به أعطى وإذا دعي به أجاب قال فلما كان من القابلة خرج بريدة عشاء فلقيه النبي ﷺ فأخذ بيده فأدخله المسجد فإذا صوت الرجل يقرأ فقال النبي ﷺ أتقوله مراء فقال بريدة أتقوله مراء يا رسول الله فقال النبي ﷺ لا بل مؤمن منيب لا بل مؤمن منيب فإذا الأشعري يقرأ بصوت له في جانب المسجد فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن الأشعري أو إن عبد الله بن قيس أعطي مزمارا من مزامير داود فقلت ألا أخبره يا رسول الله قال بلى فأخبره فأخبرته فقال أنت لي صديق أخبرتني عن رسول الله ﷺ بحديث
