I went on a military expedition to Yemen with Ali, and I noticed a certain harshness in him. When I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I mentioned Ali and spoke disparagingly of him. I saw the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ change, and he said, "Burayda, am I not closer to the believers than they are to themselves?"I replied, "Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Whoever I am his master, Ali is his master."

غزوت مع علي اليمن فرأيت منه جفوة فلما قدمت على رسول الله ﷺ ذكرت عليا فتنقصته فرأيت وجه رسول الله ﷺ يتغير فقال يا بريدة ألست أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم قلت بلى يا رسول الله قال من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه
Its isnad is sahih, and Ibn Abu Ghaniya is Abdul-Malik bin Humayd bin Abu Ghaniya, and he is trustworthy, his hadith is found among all the collectors [al-jamaah]. The hadith, without its introduction, has already appeared at 19224.
