The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to the tribe of Amr bin Awf to reconcile a dispute that had arisen among them. The time for prayer arrived, and Bilal said to Abu Bakr, "Shall I call the iqamah so you may lead the people in prayer?"Abu Bakr replied, "Yes."So Bilal called the iqamah, and Abu Bakr stepped forward to lead the people in prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, making his way through the rows. The people began clapping, but Abu Bakr would hardly turn around during prayer. When the clapping grew louder, Abu Bakr looked back and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ coming through the rows. Abu Bakr started to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him to remain in his place. Abu Bakr stepped back nonetheless, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and led the people in prayer.When he finished the prayer, he said, "Abu Bakr, what kept you from staying in your place when I gestured to you?"Abu Bakr replied, "It is not for the son of Abu Quhafa to lead the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Why is it that when something happens to you during prayer, you clap? Say 'Subhan Allah' instead, for clapping is for women."
حدثنا بهز حدثنا حماد يعني ابن سلمة أخبرنا أبو حازم
أن رسول الله ﷺ أتى بني عمرو بن عوف في لحاء أي خصام كان بينهم ليصلح بينهم فحانت الصلاة فقال بلال لأبي بكر أقيم وتصلي بالناس فقال أبو بكر نعم فأقام بلال وتقدم أبو بكر ليصلي بالناس فجاء رسول الله ﷺ يخرق الصفوف فصفح القوم وكان أبو بكر لا يكاد يلتفت في الصلاة فلما أكثروا التفت أبو بكر فإذا هو برسول الله ﷺ يخرق الصفوف فتأخر أبو بكر وأومأ إليه رسول الله ﷺ أن مكانك فتأخر أبو بكر وتقدم رسول الله ﷺ فصلى بهم فلما قضى صلاته قال يا أبا بكر ما بالك إذ أومأت إليك لم تقم قال ما كان لابن أبي قحافة أن يؤم رسول الله ﷺ ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ ما لكم إذا نابكم أمر صفحتم سبحوا فإن التصفيح للنساء
