Sahl bin Saad reported,

I was among the people when a woman came in and said, "Messenger of Allah, she has offered herself to you in marriage, so give us your decision concerning her."A man said, "Marry her to me."The Prophet did not answer him until she had stood there a third time. Then he said to the man, "Do you have anything?"He replied, "No."The Prophet said, "Go and look for something."The man went and returned, saying, "I found nothing."The Prophet said, "Go and look again, even if it be an iron ring."He went and came back, saying, "I could not find even an iron ring."The Prophet asked, "Do you know any of the Quran?"He replied, "Yes, such-and-such a surah and such-and-such a surah."The Prophet said, "I have married her to you for what you know of the Quran."

حدثنا سفيان حدثنا أبو حازم قال سمعت

سهل بن سعد يقول

أنا في القوم إذ دخلت امرأة فقالت يا رسول الله إنها قد وهبت نفسها لك فر فيها رأيك فقال رجل زوجنيها فلم يجبه حتى قامت الثالثة فقال له عندك شيء قال لا قال اذهب فاطلب قال لم أجد قال فاذهب فاطلب ولو خاتما من حديد قال ما وجدت خاتما من حديد قال هل معك من القرآن شيء قال نعم سورة كذا وسورة كذا قال قد أنكحتكها على ما معك من القرآن
